Botswana is located in the center of South Africa. It is a very flat part of land with most of it being made up of the Kalahari Desert. It is a great destination for an African safari with the huge desert and the large population of elephants.

It also has a very small population. This country is roughly the same size geographically as France but it only has 2.2 million people living there. This destination is best for those looking to see wildlife.

The Elephants

Botswana happens to have the world’s highest population of elephants with roughly 130,000. There are roughly 415,000 elephants in Africa all together so Botswana clearly has a large percentage of the continents elephants.

Elephants are the biggest land animal remaining on the earth. They weigh 4,000-7,500 kg and can get up to 3 meters tall. They eat a lot and their trunks have a lot of skills which makes watching them very entertaining.

Where to Find Elephants in Botswana

Elephants in Botswana are best found in national parks. Chobe National Park has the most elephants with 70,000 elephants. The Linyanti is also a great place for a more secluded safari. If you’d like to see elephants in the water then go to Okavango Delta.

The best time of year to see elephants in Botswana is the dry season. This time is between June and September. There are elephant safaris available and you can even have elephant encounters at certain places.

Tourism has become very important to Botswana. Over the years it has grown a lot. 40% of Botswana is made up of national reserves or parks. It also has the shortest border in the world and is part of the only place in the world where four countries touch. This makes it very easy to travel to other African countries while visiting.

In 2019 tourism made up 13.1% of Botswana’s GDP. This is a huge increase from the 6.3% it contributed in the year 2000. Roughly 1.6 million visitors come to to Botswana every year.
